You Don’t Have To Be Great To Start!

“You don’t need to be great to get started, but you need to get started in order to be great!”

A truer saying has never been said. But too many people wait until they have everything set up, all the boxes ticked…those people should remember this… the world continues to turn. Nothing stays still! Things change, people come and go… and one day you too will be gone.

You won’t know when, you won’t know where, but one day it will be your last day. So i ask you… where will you be when the end comes? What will you have accomplished? What will you leave behind?

Jim Rohn once said “When the end comes for you, let it find you conquering a new mountain, not sliding backwards down an old one.” and he was right. Jim has gone now, but he left behind some brilliant and wonderful work that the world continues to appreciate.

Every day i get up and i force myself to look eye to eye with myself in the mirror, so i can validate the progress i have made on that previous day. Will i struggle to look in my eyes because i know i have been lazy and a disappointment, or can i look proudly at what i have accomplish so far, waking ready to embrace the new day with even more progress on my path?

Do you get up and look in the mirror each day? Try it! Face yourself. Are doing everything possible to become your vision? Or do you look down at your feet when you approach the mirror because you already know the truth.

I remember a saying which i have appreciated for many years and it goes something like this… “Advice is what we ask for when we already know the answer, but wish we didn’t”

You already should know inside yourself, why you were put here…. But you have to ask yourself “Do i have the courage to follow the vision for my life?” Well my question to you is… do you?

Since you started reading this you have taken around 10 breaths. Those breaths you will never ever get again , they are gone forever. Now knowing this, you need to make sure that every breath has reason, every movement has purpose.

Back when i was running my crews on the Happy Feet films i used to ask my people, “If you were this character could you tell me…Who you are? Where are you going? How are you getting there? Why are you going there? What are you going to do when you get there?

If you ask yourself these questions you will get closer to your purpose. All of these things influence something’s movement, purpose and action. So ask yourself these questions as they matter.

So what do you do when you find your vision? Simple… You follow it!

Even against everyone’s wants, wishes and beliefs, you follow it. This is YOUR LIFE! Not someone else’s, and if you don’t go after what you want, you will pay a price greater than you will have the backing to pay… and it is a debt that increases with time.

Along the way, always be honest with yourself. if things aren’t working, find out what it is that isn’t working and get rid of that influence. In order to succeed you have to have a level of pragmatism about you. Most of all, once you have a clear vision of what you want then you need to take action to get it. too many people i have met in life are continually studying, doing degree after degree, but they never put any of it into practice.

What is the point of being the most highly qualified student on the planet if you never ever put it into practice. No one ever remembered the longest serving student, the world remembers those who influence change in the planet.

It might be change for the worse, change for the better, people who find cures or break records or stand up for causes regardless of their personal costs. These are the people the world regards! Strive to be one of these people.

Of course this is the tough path, there are no guarantees you’ll get there, no promises. But if this is the life of your choosing, then this is the path you have to take in order to be happy and find fulfillment.

Work diligently towards Mastering what you were born to do, but remember,  nothing involving mastery ever came easy… and nothing really, is ever truly mastered. You might be one of the most proficient at what you do on the planet, but as human beings, we are forever learning… and if we aren’t, then we’re on the way out.

So… Dream, Act, Live, Evolve, Create and Learn. Learn everything you can, but remember one important facet of doing what you were born to do… once you’ve done it, you must remember to pass it on. Don’t let your accumulated skills and knowledge go to waste by letting them die with you… better the world by passing it on. This is how you keep a little bit of immortality.

And remember what my opening statement was “You don’t need to be great to get started, but you need to get started in order to be great!” So get out there and fail, learn to succeed, but above all… just get on with it. GVB
